GOAL:

To better understand the great commission and the role every believer plays in it.

CONVERSATION STARTER:

  • Would you rather lose your ability to speak or have to say everything you are thinking?

  • Briefly share the role other people played in your salvation (who invited you to church, why you agreed to listen to them, etc.).

REVIEW:

Ask Champion Group members to share some of their favorite points, examples, or questions from Sunday’s sermon. Use your own notes to help you recall your own favorite points and encourage your Champion Group members to take notes and reference them as well.

DISCUSSION

The Great Commission

Read: 1 Corinthians 3:5-9, John 4:1-27

  • Whose responsibility is it to tell others the good news about Jesus Christ? What does it tell you about a person when they do not feel that evangelism is an important part of being a Christian?

  • In John 4 we see Jesus talking to a Samaritan woman. What stands out to you about their encounter? What does Jesus do that is unexpected?

  • How can we follow Jesus’s example based on this interaction?

  • In John 4:27, why do you think the disciples were surprised to see Jesus talking to the woman? Why do you think they decided not to ask Him about the encounter?

  • What keeps you from inviting others to church or sharing the Good News with them?

  • Describe a time when you talked to someone about Jesus and it caused them to attend church or led to them giving their lives to Jesus. What did you do in the conversation, or beforehand, that helped?

Don’t Be Discouraged

Read: 1 Corinthians 3:5-9, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

  • What is the difference between planting and watering in 1 Corinthians 3?

  • Why should we not get discouraged if someone we invite to church does not get saved right away? Who ultimately is responsible for growth when we are faithful to plant and water?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. What do you think Paul meant when he said that he becomes all things to all men? Do you think it is necessary for us today to be become all things to all men?

  • In what way did Paul become like a slave to Christ? How can we become slaves to Christ as well?

  • What helped make the gospel more understandable to you before you knew Christ? What do you think people misunderstand about the gospel?

  • What can we do to make sure that the gospel is represented correctly through our lives?

ACT ON IT

Be a part of the Great Commission and bring someone with you to church this weekend! Write down the names of a few people you want to invite and put them somewhere you will see them every day.

Even though God told King David that he would not be the one to build Him a temple, David knew that it was something he wanted to be a part of. Not only did he give, but he gave willingly and gladly, which prompted others to do the same. When we give willingly and gladly to the Lord, we show Him how much he means to us and we ensure that we can be trusted with even greater blessings.

When was the last time you gave to God out of a desire to show honor to Him? With the end of the year coming up, consider what you could give to God as an offering that would show Him your thankfulness. You can do so by donating on the Champion Center App or through PushPay.

Ask Champion Group members to share any prayer requests or testimonies they have. Record any notes or prayer requests to pray for members during the week. Take time to pray and ask if anyone would like to receive salvation, baptism of the Holy Spirit, or prayer for a physical need.
