Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Spring is in the air, and it evokes memories of early mornings filled with cleaning supplies and the unmistakable scent of Pine Sol. If raised like me, you know the drill – spring cleaning has arrived! At the break of dawn, my mother would launch into action, armed with a ladder, bucket, and mop. Our house would soon sparkle, clutter was banished, and everything put in its rightful place. Maintaining this pristine condition with three children was a challenge. Yet, my mother seamlessly integrated spring cleaning into her routine, alongside cooking, cleaning, and caring for us. As I ponder this annual phenomenon, parallels can be drawn between the physical act of spring cleaning and the spiritual journey of self-reflection and growth.

Refresh: Just as we refresh our homes during spring cleaning, we can seek renewal in our spirits through repentance and spiritual cleansing. Psalm 51:10 implores, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Take time for meaningful introspection and reconnect with God, revitalizing your spiritual walk following this Easter season.

Organize: Just as we organize our homes for efficiency and orderliness, we can prioritize God's will in our lives, aligning our actions with His guidance. 1 Corinthians 14:40 reminds us, "But all things should be done decently and in order." Our God is a God of order so let’s take our cues from Him and get our spiritual house in order placing Him first.

Declutter: Just as we declutter our physical spaces, we must rid our hearts of sin and distractions to make room for God's presence and blessings. Hebrews 12:1 urges, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." Clear away distractions and create space for spiritual growth.

Daily Maintenance: Like the daily upkeep of our homes, we should cultivate daily spiritual disciplines to keep our hearts pure before God. James 4:8 instructs, "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." Engage in regular prayer and study of scripture to maintain spiritual closeness with the Lord.

Goal Setting: Just as we set goals for spring cleaning, we should set goals for spiritual growth, aspiring to be like Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions. 2 Peter 3:18 encourages, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." Set achievable spiritual goals and watch your life improve.

Intentionality: Spring cleaning requires intentionality and planning, and so does spiritual formation. It requires deliberate effort and dedication to become more like Christ. A practical way to do this is found in Matthew 6:33, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." This has been my #1 verse since the day I was saved and remains the same nearly four decades later. He must come first!

Peace & Joy: Just as we find peace and joy in a clean home, we can also experience it through living in accordance with God's Word. 1 Corinthians 14:33 affirms, "For God is not a God of confusion but of peace." Just like the old saying, No God, No peace, Know God, Know peace!

Reflection: Just as a clean home reflects diligence and care, our lives should reflect the image of God through purity and righteousness. Ephesians 5:1-2 urges, "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Let your life be a testament to God’s love and compassion.

Preparation: Just as we prepare our homes for guests, we should prepare our hearts to receive God's blessings through spiritual readiness. Proverbs 24:27 advises, "Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house." Preparation is an important ingredient in our spiritual walk especially in light of His soon return!

Consistency: Consistency is key to maintaining both physical cleanliness and spiritual well-being. James 1:22 admonishes, "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Remain dedicated to spiritual disciplines and watch things turn around.

These parallels between the physical act of spring cleaning and spiritual concepts provide us with practical insights and encouragement for our spiritual journeys. Don’t be discouraged! Start today and become the beautiful reflection of God you were meant to be, drawing others closer to Him through your actions and example.
