Shift Your Focus: The Full Armor of God
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we* are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

When we read Ephesians 6:10-17 (please read this passage before continuing), our minds almost always jump straight to the imagery of a Roman soldier. We visualize the heavy bronze breastplate, the iron-edged shield, and the sharpened sword. Most of the sermons and Bible studies that I have heard on the subject focused heavily on the metaphor of the armor itself.
But what if we are missing the forest for the trees?
If we look past the physical military gear, we discover that Paul isn’t just giving us a checklist of spiritual equipment. He is giving us a breakdown of the actual attributes of God Himself. In fact, in Ephesians 5:1 it says to be imitators of God, and now in chapter 6, we are given the godly layout of how to obtain victory in our daily lives. We don't win spiritual battles by trying to manufacture our own strength; we win by clothing ourselves in who God is.
Understanding the "Why" Behind the Warfare
Before Paul lists a single piece of armor, he establishes the foundational purpose of this passage in verses 10–13. He gives us the instruction, but more importantly, he highlights the "why."
The Command: "Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor..." (v. 10-11)
The Why: "...so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil." (v. 11)
Paul reminds us that our true struggle is not against flesh-and-blood enemies. We are dealing with unseen, spiritual forces of darkness. Because the enemy's strategies are spiritual, our defense must be divine.
In verse 13, he repeats the instructions for emphasis. When you submit your life to God, you are actively arming yourself with His personal protection. As James 4:7 reminds us: "Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Deconstructing the Armor: The 6 Attributes of God
To live in victory, we must look past the leather and metal metaphors and examine the spiritual core of each piece.
1. The Belt of Truth
Without knowing the absolute truth of God, we open ourselves up to the deception of moral relativism—the dangerous idea that truth changes based on how we feel or what culture dictates.
God's truth is fixed and personal:
His Word is Truth: "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." (John 17:17)
His Son is Truth: Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life..." (John 14:6)
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protects the heart, but we cannot manufacture our own righteousness to guard it. Our best efforts fall short. Instead, we must put on the righteousness of Christ.
Seek First: We are told to seek His righteousness, not our own (Matthew 6:33).
Obtained by Faith: "We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ." (Romans 3:22). Just like Abraham, when we place our faith in God, His righteousness is credited to our account (Galatians 3:6-7).
3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Spiritual warfare can bring anxiety and chaos, but the Gospel provides a firm footing of supernatural peace.
The Mindset: Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “rejoice in the Lord”, and reminds us that He is near. It also commands us to “be anxious for nothing” thus trading anxiety for prayer and thanksgiving. When we do, "the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
The Practice: Peace is maintained not by dwelling on the problems that can cause the anxiety, but dwell on what is true, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8-9). This is a promise that if we follow His divine instructions, we cannot help but shed the anxiety and live in total peace.
4. The Shield of Faith
The devil constantly hurls flaming arrows of doubt, shame, and fear. The shield that stops them is faith—but faith is not an emotion we pump ourselves up to feel; it is rooted in message and response.
Where it starts: Faith starts with the word, it is near and in our hearts, the word of faith that we hear preached (Romans 6:6-8)
What it Declares: True faith confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in the resurrection, resulting in salvation and a life that will never be put to shame (Romans 10:9-16).
How it Arrives: "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." (Romans 10:17).
5. The Helmet of Salvation
The helmet protects our minds. Assurance of salvation keeps us from falling prey to the enemy's lies that we are abandoned or unlovable.
The Process: Salvation is something we actively walk out. Paul writes, "Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear." (Philippians 2:12).
The Power Source: You aren't doing this alone. "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him." (Philippians 2:13).
6. The Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God)
The only offensive weapon listed is the Word of God. The Word is not merely ink on a page; it is alive, powerful, and synonymous with God Himself.
The Eternal Word: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1). When you use Scripture to fight temptation and deception, you are wielding the very power of Christ.
The Daily Takeaway
The Full Armor of God isn't a magical suit of clothes you think about once in a while. It is a daily, intentional decision to wrap yourself in Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation, and the Word of God.
If we do not consciously put on these attributes of God every morning, we leave ourselves exposed and set ourselves up for failure. But when we clothe ourselves in Him (the full armor), we can stand firm through any storm the enemy sends our way.
