Keep Digging

For Every PROMISE, PERSEVERANCE is Required to See the PROVISION.

The journey of faith is often marked by promises from God, but those promises require perseverance to see them fulfilled. Isaac’s story in Genesis 26 beautifully illustrates this truth. God gave Isaac a promise, but before he saw the full provision, he had to press on, endure opposition, and remain faithful.

The PROMISE

Genesis 26:2-6 (NLT) tells us:
"The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, ‘Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you. Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father...’ So Isaac stayed in Gerar."

God made a promise, but seeing it through required faith. Just like Isaac, we are often called to trust God in unfamiliar or challenging places. 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us, “for we walk by faith, not by sight."

The PERSEVERANCE

As we read through Genesis chapter 26, Isaac’s journey didn’t come without struggle. Isaac was given a promise from God, but each time he had to dig a well, he had to keep digging to see God’s faithfulness.  As he sought water—essential for survival—he encountered contention and opposition. Each well he dug symbolized a step of faith:

  • Esek (Contention) – The first well Isaac dug, but the Philistines quarreled over it.

  • Sitnah (Opposition) – The second well, also disputed by the Philistines.

  • Rehoboth (Room/Space) – The third well, where there was no quarrel, signifying peace and prosperity.

  • Beersheba (Well of Oath) – The fourth well, dug after the Lord appeared to him and reaffirmed His promise.

Just because God has given you a promise doesn’t mean you won’t face contention or opposition. But if you persevere, God will bring you to a place of peace and provision.

Hebrews 10:36 reminds us: “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”

The PROVISION

Genesis 26:23-25 tells us: "From there Isaac moved to Beersheba, where the Lord appeared to him on the night of his arrival. ‘I am the God of your father, Abraham,’ he said. ‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you and will bless you...’ Then Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the Lord. He set up his camp at that place, and his servants dug another well."

God, in his loving mercy, reminds Issac of the promise He gave him after many disappointments. Maybe you have faced disappointments or haven’t seen the promise fulfilled. Remind yourself of God’s promises he has spoken of you because He is not a man that He should lie. He’s too faithful to fail you!

Before Isaac saw the full provision, he built an altar. He worshiped in faith. Likewise, we are called to put our promises on the altar. An altar represents sacrifice and sanctification—it is the place where we declare, “God, I trust You.”

Keep Digging, Keep Believing

Isaac redug the wells of revival from his father, Abraham. We, too, are called to redig wells of revival—within our families, churches, and communities. The enemy may try to stop you with contention and opposition, but keep digging. Your Rehoboth is coming. Your Beersheba is coming. Your promise is coming.

Stay the course, hold onto the promise, and trust that God’s provision is on the way. Keep digging!
